SLEEP SMARTER

Updated: Apr 27

Feeling strung out after a restless night of tossing and turning is no way to tackle the 9-5 grind. If you're at your wit's end with getting less than your eight hours of beauty sleep, maybe you're doing it wrong. Huh? How can I be sleeping wrong, you say. Well, whilst hitting the hay is no grand science, restless sleep patterns, and sleep conditions can be resolved with just a few tips and tricks for smarter sleeping. Give it a try if you don't believe us...

1.GET COMFY

There's an old saying, 'invest in good shoes and a supportive mattress. If you're not in one, you're in the other' – sometimes it's as easy as flipping your mattress. Check the life cycle of your bed, as any bedding over seven years old loses its support and in turn, will affect your sleep. Indulge in a few little luxuries like high thread count sheets and comfy pillows to make pushing out the Zs an enjoyable experience.

2.REDUCE SCREEN TIME

It's 1 am and you are still trying to perfect your pitch for tomorrow's presentation, but the blue light emitted from your computer screen is actually a brain stimulant and will certainly keep you away long after your bedtime. Keep TVs and laptops out of the bedroom and why not snuggle up with the latest edition of Citizen K Arabia before bed?

3.PUT YOUR PHONE AWAY

Relentlessly refreshing your Instagram feed or checking emails in your PJs keeps your mind active and your senses on edge. Try and remove your phone from the bedroom ( we know, it's easier said than done) and invest in an old-school alarm clock as a smartphone substitute. Try not to use your phone in bed and definitely don't sleep with it – you'd be surprised how many girls sleep with their phone under their pillow...

4.CLEAR YOUR MIND

Why is it when your head hits the pillow, you think of a zillion thing you forgot that day? A common problem we all suffer with, don't berate yourself until the early hours – make a list and forget about it. Keeping a pen and paper on your bedside table is the easiest solution (that doesn't involve your smartphone!) and a really cathartic problem-solving tool that you can use wherever you are.

5.RELAX

Going to bed tense is a big no-no for trouble sleepers, instead, try a few simple yoga poses in your PJs. Yoga is renowned for its calming properties and great for regulating your breathing. The easiest way to shake off stress is to try a few stretching exercises that will alleviate any pent-up emotions and leave you feeling a little more zen!
