Sophia Guellaty is a journalist who launched several media in the Middle East and North Africa. She is now the founder and Editor-in-Chief of www.milleworld.com a one of a kind platform dedicated to tackling Arab identity and our youth culture.
WHERE DID YOUR PROFESSIONAL ADVENTURE START? WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO FOLLOW THIS CAREER PATH?
It started during my first internship at Elite Models at 16 years old, and my first writing job for ELLE France at 19. I knew that I wanted to be part of the media world from the fashion perspective and try to bring out an Arab voice within the international conversation.
TELL US MORE ABOUT MILLEWORLD?
By uniting unabashed opinions from some of the region’s most influential voices, MILLE puts a much-needed spotlight on youth culture in the region.
Through the prisms of art, travel, beauty, lifestyle, and fashion, MILLE aims to breakdown the tired clichés and seamlessly combine local talent with a global perspective.
Because, whilst we live to travel and discover the world, we also cherish our roots and are still curious about our region, and more importantly, what it really means to be a young, global Arab in 2018.
As a generation, we’re united by our contradictions. We have an insatiable hunger for knowledge and a thirst for culture – but we’re also deeply aware of our social responsibility.
And whether that means simply learning to live our best lives in the most authentic way, or learning to be more inclusive – MILLE aims to be a generation-defining title that values timeless experiences, celebrates diversity and gives young Arabs something to truly be proud of.
DO YOU HAVE ANY PERSONAL ROLE MODELS YOU LOOK UP TO FOR INSPIRATION?
Diana Vreeland for her daring, visionary side and beautiful charisma. Elaine Wentworth for what she is doing with Teen Vogue. Azzedine Alaïa for always staying true to who he is and being so generous with his friends. Giovanna Battaglia for her sense of style. Pope Francis because he is a great man uniting everyone (he even seduced me and I am Muslim). So many other people including friends and family members. I am a lover of people :).
CAN YOU GIVE US ANY WORDS OF WISDOM FOR STARTING OUT AND SUCCEEDING IN YOUR SECTOR?
Think big. Give yourself the tools to succeed (education, internships, hard work ethic) and surround yourself with a kickass team of people who know things you don’t.
BEST PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE RECEIVED
Shut up, and listen.
COULD YOU TELL US WHAT IS AN « INFLUENTIAL WOMAN » FOR YOU?
